Why is it called Burleigh Heads?
Geography and history Burleigh Heads takes its name from its type of geography, the headland, and it also has strong links to the Burleigh family. In 1840, surveyor James Warner was so impressed by the ambitious landform that emerged from the ocean and named it "Burly Head". The burly, of course, is a powerful and manly hyphenate that refers to the grand and gallant visage of the headland. The name gradually found its way to the more genteel “Burleigh Heads.”
The name also reflects the area’s natural beauty and cultural importance as the headland is considered one of the unique landforms along the coastline. These days Burleigh Heads is as well-known for the people, the beaches and the national park as it is for its features.
